Last night on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, singer-actress Lady Gaga made an appearance to discuss her new role in the upcoming season of American Horror Story: Hotel. Unfortunately, she made an ill-advised comment in referencing her vampire-like character as being a “hemophiliac…needing to drink blood to survive.”
Although it is understood that vampires are fictional, we are concerned with the dismissive nature of the comment as it compares the very serious challenges people with bleeding disorders face with those of fictitious beings. While we feel there was no malicious intent on her part, we are working with Lady Gaga’s representation and the writers and producers of American Horror Story: Hotel to educate them on the basics of hemophilia and other inherited blood disorders to lessen the likelihood of similar comments in the future.
